From Bethlehem . . . Meaning House of Bread

Jesus, the Living Bread
As Church, we have officially completed the Christmas Season which began on Christmas Eve, and last weekend, ended with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord. During this sacred period of time, we celebrated Jesus’ birth as the Living Bread given from Heaven in Bethlehem (the House of Bread). We also celebrated the Epiphany of the Lord, where Jesus, Whose name means “One who saves,” is manifested to all the world. As seen in the depiction of the visiting of the magi to the right, we notice that there are only two kings. The interpretation of this painting suggests that we may be anointed as the third king manifesting in our own life, the life of God where we become His life-giving bread to others.

Picture
In Christ’s saving mission, he is anointed on the day
of His Baptism as Priest, Prophet and King (Shepherd). The High Priest that leads the perfect holy life as God’s goodness and love on this earth; Prophet, as the Word made flesh, God living among His people; and King, selflessly giving of Himself for the needs of the people, as a Shepherd taking care of His flock. In His Baptism by St. John, Jesus humbles Himself once again as He did to become a vulnerable child in a stable, as the Divine is born among us and becomes one with humanity. For us, is this the end of the Christmas Season, or just the beginning?

During the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, we celebrate our own birth, chosen by name, and by our Baptism we are given unique gifts through the Holy Spirit. We live out our mission that we share with Jesus as priest, leading a good, holy life, as prophet, to live out our lives manifesting Our Lord and His teachings in our words and in our deeds, and king (shepherd), sharing God’s love by selflessly giving our lives for the good of others as we take care of each other, especially the most vulnerable among us.

The Lord kneels at the feet of John the Baptist, a mere human, as He humbles Himself and surrenders to the Will of God to become one of us to be anointed for His mission. May we, like one of the magi kneel in front of our loving God, and as anointed from the sacred waters of our own baptism, bear our gifts to Him and in this New Year, lead a good, holy life in service to Our God and one another.

Healing, Hope, and Peace . . .

Last weekend we celebrated the Epiphany of the Lord. In following His light, every one of us, as Children of God, we become His light to all. We are to believe and know that the Lord’s light is held close to the hearts of all those suffering, those afflicted, those vulnerable. As the Light of Christ we receive Him in our minds, hearts, and souls. And, just like the Magi, we bring Him, His Light into the world – but to do this, we must deeply remember – the LORD can transform all to GOODNESS – all to WHOLENESS of HEALTH and LIFE.

On January 1st, on the Solemnity of Mary, the Holy Mother of God, we gathered at Our Lady Queen of Peace Centers of Life at the sites of Our Lady Help of Christians, Maria Hilf Chapel and at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Lewiston, NY and prayed Living Rosaries for Healing, Hope, and Peace. We joined our Bishop and the faithful in praying a rosary in our sacred spaces -- in our churches, in our homes across the Diocese for the Lord to send His graces upon us in this New Year to heal us and for Our Lady Queen of Peace to intercede in helping to make us, all those in need, whole.

Healing, Hope, and Peace . . .
At the end of the Christmas Season, we celebrated the Epiphany of the Lord and the Lord’s Baptism. As Catholics, we believe and know that the Lord’s light is held close to the hearts of all those suffering, those afflicted, those vulnerable. Celebrating His birth, we celebrate our rebirth! We know that the Healing Light of Christ shines in our minds, hearts, and souls. We believe that LORD can transform all to GOODNESS – all to WHOLENESS of HEALTH and LIFE.

At the beginning of this New year, two out of our five Our Lady Queen of Peace Centers of Life being established throughout the Diocese, led the way for all of us to pray specifically to help the most vulnerable. At the Center sites of Our Lady Help of Christians in Cheektowaga and at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine in Lewiston, we prayed Living Rosaries for Healing, Hope, and Peace. We joined our Bishop and the faithful in praying a rosary in our sacred spaces -- in our churches, in our homes across the Diocese for the Lord to send His graces upon us in this New Year. We pray to the Lord to heal us and for Our Lady Queen of Peace to intercede in helping to make us, all those in need, whole.

At the foot of the Cross, the Lord gave us His Mother to aid humanity. During this time, Hodie (this day the Lord has made), we ask our dear Blessed Mother, Our Mother in Heaven, to help us on the Way of the Lord. We implore our Mother’s intercession to help us move smoothly with the Spirit to heal, rebuild and renew our Church. The Most Reverend Michael Fisher, our Bishop of the Diocese of Buffalo asked us to pray to Mary, Undoer of Knots -- to aid us in the renewal process. Now as we move forward in our process of rebirth in spirituality and healing, we ask for Our Lady, Queen of Peace’s intercession to bring us to the Lord’s Shalom, His enduing love and Peace, to be shared across the Diocese and in the world around us. The following two ideal goals were created from the original guidelines that the Task Force for the Renewal Process identified to help the leadership formulate and develop within each of the Family of Families:

1.Every Family will be known as a center of prayer, spiritual nourishment, and a place to encounter Jesus in the Sacraments.

2.Every Family will be known for charity and healing, with special care for the poor, the vulnerable and the wounded. Our Lady Queen of Peace Centers of Life are being established to bring and offer to the people of each Vicariate (region of the Buffalo Diocese) programming in spirituality and healing which will implement growth in overall spirituality and evangelization but also to help develop wholeness of life through a spirituality of hope and healing our sacramental and prayerful practices.
Our Catholic Family of Cheektowaga has been chosen to be the first of five centers across the Diocese to offer spirituality and healing in a accessible sites so the people of God can visit or participate in spirituality and healing worship sites, devotion and liturgical experiences, retreat and respite offerings. As you have seen an increase in these types of offerings flow from our Healing Ministry which is setting up the Centers.

Stay tuned for more information as our Center unfolds as God works through each us for offering our gifts and ministries to bring the wholeness of life to all of us and those in our midst.

Our Catholic Family of Cheektowaga’s Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life

Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life includes participation from our parishes of Our Lady Help of Christians, Queen of Martyrs, Resurrection and St. Josaphat’s sites from its parishioners and ministers to become instruments of God’s spirituality and healing while imitating the Apostles and Christ’s disciples as they were commissioned to do so which flowed from the Word to bring to fruition a spirituality of hope for reconciliation, rebirth, and renewal (Mark, 4:35–41; 10:52 . . . Matthew, 8:23–27; 9:6; 12:13 . . . Luke, 8:22–25; 10:9 . . . and John 11:25 . . .)

Many believe that if we are truly moving into a new era of apostolic times (a Kairos time), there exists an urgent call for a great shift from maintenance of our faith to mission. The primary driving force of this mission is the Holy Spirit imbuing unique gifts and charisms of evangelization, signs of power and healing, powerful conversions, forgiveness, compassion, and mercy (paraphrasing an unknown author).

Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life with other centers across the Diocese will implement Spirituality and Healing programming of Renewing of Parish Life by implementing offerings though our ministries, agency affiliates, schools, religious education groups, and organizations. We will provide a safe, sacred space of spiritual growth, healing, respite, retreat, and/or worship to those who are suffering, disenfranchised, experiencing spiritual dryness, bereavement, feeling of being harmed, injured and/or outcast.

Our Center has now established a Spiritual Life and Wellness Team composed of several representatives across our parish family. The Center is also currently recruiting individuals interested in developing a Mental Health Wellness Team. Both of these teams will address the varying needs for outreach flowing from our parish-based ministries, agencies and organizations to individuals, couples, and families. This outreach will attend to the cultural, age-related, physically disabling, and spiritually diverse needs of those seeking support. In addition, at this moment, the Center is in the process of setting up a Wellness Library that all of our parishioners and surrounding parish families will have access.

More information will be provided in terms of all future programming offered by Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life.

Our Catholic Family of Cheektowaga’s Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life (Cont’d)

Our Lady Queen of Peace Center of Life with other centers across the Diocese, including our sister center at Our Lady of Fatima Shrine, will implement Spirituality and Healing programming of Renewing of Parish Life by implementing offerings though our ministries, agency affiliates, schools, religious education groups, and organizations. We will provide a safe, sacred space of spiritual growth, worship, healing, respite, and/or retreat for those who are vulnerable and in need stemming from their suffering in physical, mental health and spiritual ills, feeling disenfranchised, experience of dryness in relation to God and one another, bereavement, being harmed, injured and/or being perceived as an outcast.
As you are aware, we have just completed the first series in the journey of healing this past week which included presentations on being open to the way toward wholeness of health and life and coping with adversity and suffering. A Healing Mass and Service was at the center of our journey as the Eucharist is not only the source and summit of our faith but offers such healing power of transformation in our lives.

As we approach Lent we are asking all those interested to come to a HOLY HOUR offered each day of the week, Monday through Friday, at one of our family worship sites of Our Lady Help of Christians, Queen of Martyrs, Resurrection and St. Josaphat (beginning February 23rd) depending on the schedule of the parish family. The Holy Hour will include Morning or Evening (Vespers) Liturgy of the Hours prayer, Holy Mass, and conclude with the Rosary.

Stay tuned for specific Holy Hour offerings at each parish site.

Our Journey of Lent . . .

“But when you give alms, do not let your left hand know what your right is doing, so that your almsgiving may be secret. And, your Father who sees in secret will repay you.” -- Mt 6:3-4

As we have entered into our Lenten journey on Ash Wednesday, let us examine our ways of sacrifice, ways of love: almsgiving, fasting and prayer. Each sacrifice is a gift offered freely and sincerely. The late Pope Francis reminds us that as Lent begins, “we begin on our path to conversion as individuals and as a community.” And in this conversion, “we must give way to the central Gospel virtue of love – love for all. Charity, love, is the sharing with the one we love in all things. Love makes us similar, it creates equality; it breaks down walls and eliminates distances. God did this with us.” The Holy Father teaches that “the logic of the incarnation and the cross” is “God’s logic, the logic of love.”

During this time of Lent, let us each look into our heart, the deepest part of our being, and let us honestly
examine our relationship with God and with each other. Let us take our first steps on our “path to conversion” by using God’s logic of love.

Christ's appearance in our midst has made it undeniably clear that changing the human heart and changing human society are not separate tasks but are as interconnected as the two beams of the cross. -Henri Nouwen
